Simi Valley wildlife control tip of the month:
House Mouse Trapping: How To Trap a House Mouse
There are several types of Simi Valley wildlife removal traps, baits and other methods to trap a mouse. Some of them are proved
to be effective and humane – others not so much.
Snap traps are the most commonly used traps. Snap traps are put in the places where mice regularly appear.
The bait (peanut butter is recommended) is put on the snap trap and when mouse steps on it, it instantly kills
the mammal. Snap traps are effective, cheap but not recommended if there are small children or pets in the house.
They can easily hurt themselves.
Some Simi Valley pest control people find effective to use glued surfaces for catching mice. When caught mouse suffers from lack of food and
water and slowly dies. It is a least humane method to kill a mouse as it may suffer for a week and sometimes more.
Electronic mouse traps are getting more popular. Even though it may cost a little more, it‘s effectiveness proves the
price. Electric shock is eliminated by the device after the mouse steps on it. The shock makes mouse’s heart to stop
and it dies instantly.
Those who are concerned with humane Simi Valley animal control trapping methods can use catch-and-release traps. Catch-and-release traps with bait
inside are set in the places where mice may search for food. Once trapped, mouse can be set free. However, it is important
to release mouse at least 200 meters (220 yards) away from the house location. Otherwise, mouse will get back to the house.
In order to attract mouse to the trap, various baits may be used. There is a wide variety of bait including shape, color and
material. Basically mice are drawn to sweet, fatty, high-calorie foods. Depending on mice species different baits should be
considered. In Simi Valley animal trapping practice, peanut butter has proved its effectiveness. For more sweet toothed mice bites of marshmallows, drops
of maple syrup, bits of softer candies, leftovers of chocolate may be left in the traps. If sweets do not appeal the mice, it
is recommended to use fatty foods, such as slices of hot dogs, soft cheese, and bits of bacon or crackers with butter. As mice
are grain eaters some bird seeds, nuts or pet food may also work.
There is also a Simi Valley exterminator option to get rid of a mouse while having a cat or even a dog. However, having a cat is more acceptable as cats
are natural predators of mice while some dogs even if catching a mouse can get poisoned.
